Foundations of Discipleship

Dewey UMC members are committed to the five disciplines of:

  1. Worship: as a dynamic and inspiring experience of the presence of God through Word, sacrament, music, and Christian community both in our church and in our daily lives.

A Biblical Definition: Worship is the believers' response of all that they are - mind, emotions, will, and body - to what God is, says, and does.  Worship is a loving response that is balanced by the fear of the Lord, and it is a deepening response as the believer comes to know God better.

    - Weekly public worship
    - Weekly prayer for all worship leaders and for God's presence to be felt in each service
    - Daily private worship that includes praise, Bible study, and prayer
    - A lifestyle of worship - everything is done for the glory of God

    Scripture Support:
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth (Psalm 96:9).
Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs (Psalm 100:2).

  2. Fellowship: by experiencing life together through unselfish loving, honest sharing, practical serving, sacrificial giving, and sympathetic comforting.

    - Become a faithful church member.
    - Protect the unity of the church.
    - Attend Sunday school and/or Growth Groups.
    - Participate in fellowship activities.
    - Practice caring for others through notes, calls, visits, and prayer.
    - Practice hospitality for all guests.

    Scripture Support:
Each one of you is part of the body of Christ, and you were chosen to live together in peace (Colossians 3:15, CEV).

  3. Giving: as faithful stewards (managers) of God's resources; giving of our time, talents, and treasures.

    - Give the first fruits of each source of income to honor the Lord (Proverbs 3:9-10).
    - Recognize the "tithe" as the Biblical standard for giving (Leviticus 27:32, Malachi 3:10).
    - As "grace givers," we are to grow in the grace of giving (2 Corinthians 8:7).
    - Share your testimony that relates to giving or stewardship in general.
    - Participate in a Crown Biblical Financial Study or Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University.
    - Give of your time and talents.

    Scripture Support:
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
Everyone should give whatever they have decided in their heart. They shouldn’t give with hesitation or because of pressure. God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7).
  4. Serving: because through our serving we witness to others, experience joy, make a positive difference in our community, and fulfill one of God's purposes for our lives.

    - Identify your SHAPE for serving: Spiritual gifts, Heart/passion, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences.
    - Serve according to your SHAPE for ministry.
    - Encourage others to serve through your testimony.
    - Participate in training opportunities for serving.
    - Share new ideas for serving.

    Scripture Support:
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm.  Let nothing move you.  Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

  5. Witness: because God has called every believer to share the good news of God's love, forgiveness, and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ, enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).

    - Develop friendships with unbelievers.
    - Strive to become more Christ-like.
    - Take a class on faith-sharing.
    - Invite unbelievers to church.
    - Share your personal testimony, Christian experiences, and God's Word with unbelievers.
    - Pray daily for unbelievers to be drawn to Christ.

    Scripture Support:
Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20).
