I am greatly blessed to have the opportunity to serve at Dewey United Methodist Church.  I have worked in several churches and done consulting work for many more; all I can say is that Dewey UMC is one of the most welcoming, mission-focused churches I have ever seen.  We are an open and inclusive church with members and guests from all walks of life.  I am continually amazed at the generosity and kindness of the people of this church and their dedication to missions locally, regionally, and globally.

One of the most important lessons I have learned is that ministries do not change lives or help people. People in ministry do that! I believe I am called to preach in the local church, to equip and empower people so they can be in ministry outside the walls of the church.  I strongly believe that instead of just starting new ministries for ministry sake, that we connect people with a heart for others with the resources they need to do effective ministry.

I have a strong calling to reach the unchurched, whether they have never attended or they walked away from the church. I identify with their struggles, because I too was unchurched and untrusting of the church at one time in my life. I know how difficult things can seem when we do not have a sense of community and I feel that a sacred community is something that can help everyone in one way or another. I know this because it was a sacred community that changed the lives of my family and helped me to answer my call to ministry.

I haven't always been a pastor.  I have a lot of experience in different fields.  I know what hard work and sacrifice mean and I believe this helps me to understand what people face everyday.  I also believe that this experience helps to prepare me to serve in this new era as we redefine what church means and how to be a sacred community to all.

I would love to have the opportunity to get to know you and walk with you on your journey of faith,

Reverend Jinx M. Barber (MDiv, GDBL)
